In Fallout, best-selling author Sara Paretsky takes her private investigator V.I. Warshawski on a field trip, out of her usual Chicago haunts and into the flatlands of Kansas, as she searches for a vanished film student and a former Hollywood star. Accompanied by her faithful dog Peppy, V.I. uses the internet as well as good old fashioned leg work to track down her targets, turning over clues one-by-one as she follows their journey to Fort Riley, the University of Kansas, and an abandoned missile silo.
Paretsky’s detailed descriptions of the Kansas landscape add depth to the book as V.I. figures out what happened to the two missing people. The detective’s personal struggles, including her relationship with musician Jake, make her a very approachable heroine.
Fallout is the latest book in the V.I. Warshawski series.
