I Know a Secret by New York Times best-selling author Tess Gerritsen is the latest in the Rizzoli & Isles series, made into a popular television show featuring Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles. I was a big fan of Rizzoli & Isles and never missed an episode.
In this book, Rizzoli and Isles investigate two grisly murders. A long-ago abuse scandal, stories of martyred saints and an independent horror film that may be based in truth all figure prominently in the plot.
As they track down clues, the two women also struggle with family relationships. Jane is supportive of her mother, who is in an unhappy marriage. Maura is avoiding her mother, who is a serial killer dying of cancer. These issues had previously been resolved in a different way in the TV series, so I felt the author was rewriting history, although perhaps it’s not fair to expect Gerritsen to correlate her characters too closely with the TV show.
The brisk pace of the plot and steady uncovering of clues are typical of Gerritsen’s writing style. I Know a Secret will appeal to her many fans.
